Extension

During this project, we built an extension on the back of a bungalow which added extra space to one of the back rooms.

The client had a big family and wanted the extra space for the grandkids as well as a big window, double doors and a roof skylight to let as much light into the building as possible.

The foundations were dug out and concreted and the substructure brickwork was built to DPC level. The concrete floor was made of a hard-core base Wacker plated blinded with sand, layered with polythene, and insulated with Celotex and 150mm of concrete with a floated finish.

I built this extension on my own without a laborer so I spent a day moving the materials from the front of the property to the back and putting up wall starters to tie into the existing building.

The client’s neighbor had a fence up on his side that I had to take down and he kindly let me build the brickwork from his side. I built the extension up to the same ceiling height as the existing house, setting out the window and door openings in the process, and laid soldiers over the head of the windows and doors to match the existing house.
